Kinetic art

http://www.ted.com/talks/theo_jansen_creates_new_creatures.html
Artist Theo Jansen demonstrates the amazingly lifelike kinetic sculptures he builds from plastic tubes and lemonade bottles. His creatures are designed to move -- and even survive -- on their own.

Mother of All Demos

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mother_of_All_Demos
The Mother of All Demos is a name given retrospectively to Douglas Engelbart's December 9, 1968, demonstration at the Fall Joint Computer Conference (FJCC) at the Convention Center in San Francisco, in which a number of experimental technologies that have since become commonplace were presented. The demo featured the first computer mouse the public had ever seen, as well as introducing interactive text, video conferencing, teleconferencing, email, hypertext and a collaborative real-time editor.

Engelbart, with the help of his geographically distributed team, demonstrated the workings of the NLS (which stood for oNLine System) to the 1,000 computer professionals in attendance. The project was the result of work done at SRI International's Augmentation Research Center.

Dec. 9, 1968: The Mother of All Demos, By Dylan Tweney - This Day In Tech, Wired.
http://www.wired.com/thisdayintech/2010/12/1209computer-mouse-mother-of-all-demos/
1968: Computer scientist Douglas Engelbart kicks off the personal computer revolution with a product demonstration that is so amazing it inspires a generation of technologists. It will become known as “the mother of all demos.”
...
But Engelbart went beyond merely demonstrating a new input device — way beyond. His demo that day in San Francisco’s Brooks Hall also premiered “what you see is what you get” editing, text and graphics displayed on a single screen, shared-screen videoconferencing, outlining, windows, version control, context-sensitive help and hyperlinks. Bam!
...
While most computer scientists concentrated on making computers smart (artificial intelligence), Engelbart was interested in how computers could make humans smarter, or what he called augmented intelligence.
...
The initial inspiration for Engelbart’s life work came in the mid-1940s, when he was an electronics technician for the U.S. Navy. Looking at a radar screen, and perhaps inspired by Vannevar Bush’s groundbreaking essay “As We May Think,” Engelbart imagined a radarlike display that would let people manipulate symbols and concepts instead of merely monitoring bogies and blips.

Web 1.0, 2.0, 3.0

antara trend semasa adalah technology yg berkaitan dgn Rich Internet Application dan Web2.0
  • dulu web1.0 - one way communication, user just retrieve info (read only)
  • web2.0 menjadi interactive (eg rich web app, web based application, social-network, wiki, etc)
  • dan yg terbaru adalah web3.0 yg mempunyai pelbagai tafsiran, antaranya Semantic web, personalization, etc. eg Wolfram Alpha
  • cth rich web app: GoogleDoc, boleh edit spreedsheet macam desktop app
antara technology yg biasa didengar dlm Web2.0 adalah Ajax, Flash, Flex, mashup, web service, browser plugin/widget, XML, etc.

Data mining to find criminal suspect

They're Watching You
http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_04/b3917056_mz005.htm

http://www.focus.com/fyi/operations/10-largest-databases-in-the-world/
ChoicePoint is in the business of acquiring information about the American population -- addresses and phone numbers, driving records, criminal histories, etc., ChoicePoint has it all. For the most part, the data found in ChoicePoint's database is sold to the highest bidders, including the American government.

But how much does ChoicePoint really know? In 2002 ChoicePoint was able to help authorities solve a serial rapist case in Philadelphia and Fort Collins after producing a list of 6 potential suspects by data mining their DNA and personal records databases. In 2001 ChoicePoint was able to identify the remains of World Trade Center victims by matching DNA found in bone fragments to the information provided by victim's family members in conjunction to data found in their databases.

Bing Augmented Maps

Microsoft Adds "Augmented Reality" to Bing Maps, Technology Review
http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/editors/24800/?a=f
Microsoft just added an interesting new feature to Bing Maps--augmented reality. Actually, it's a bit more like augmented reality in reverse.

A new function, called Streetside Photos, takes real images and video clips and neatly stitches them onto the Bing Map's street-level view, using a clever combination of geolocation information (from a GPS-enabled device, or added manually by the user) and imaging-matching algorithms.

IEEE 802

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802
IEEE 802 refers to a family of IEEE standards dealing with local area networks and metropolitan area networks.

The services and protocols specified in IEEE 802 map to the lower two layers (Data Link and Physical) of the seven-layer OSI networking reference model. In fact, IEEE 802 splits the OSI Data Link Layer into two sub-layers named Logical Link Control (LLC) and Media Access Control (MAC) , so that the layers can be listed like this:
  • Data link layer (LLC Sublayer,MAC Sublayer)
  • Physical layer
IEEE 802.3 Ethernet
IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN (WLAN) & Mesh (Wi-Fi certification)
IEEE 802.15 Wireless PAN
IEEE 802.15.1 Bluetooth certification
IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee certification
IEEE 802.16 Broadband Wireless Access (WiMAX certification)
IEEE 802.20 Mobile Broadband Wireless Access
IEEE 802.22 Wireless Regional Area Network

BigDog - An amazing four legs robot

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BigDog
BigDog is a dynamically stable quadruped robot created in 2005 by Boston Dynamics with Foster-Miller, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Harvard University Concord Field Station. BigDog is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the hopes that it will be able to serve as a robotic pack mule to accompany soldiers in terrain too rough for conventional vehicles. Instead of wheels or treads, BigDog uses four legs for movement, allowing it to move across surfaces that would defeat wheels. The legs contain a variety of sensors, including joint position and ground contact. BigDog also features a laser gyroscope and a stereo vision system.

Harvests electrical power from Wi-Fi signals...

http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2010-01/rca-airenergy-pulls-power-thin-air-charging-your-phone-wi-fi
...RCA Airnergy, a small USB device that harvests electrical power from Wi-Fi signals. Anytime the device is in the vicinity of one or more Wi-Fi sources, the Airnergy is charging, converting the wireless antenna signal into DC current that can power myriad small electronics. The idea isn’t novel, but this is the first time anyone has created a commercial product efficient enough to be useful.

OLED (organic light emitting diode) displays

http://www.oled-display.net/oled-television
Plasma, and LCD televisions will soon be a thing of the past, imagine a television screen as thin as a piece of paper that weighs no more than a few ounces. Or, so flexible it could be worn around your wrist and is virtually indestructible.
The primary benefit of OLED displays over traditional LCDs is that OLEDs do not require a backlight to function, and consume less power during operation. OLED displays are expected to be more efficiently manufactured than LCDs and plasma displays.
